PREFACE
Orgy begins by challenging the reader as a robot, parrot or trained mouse trapped in inherited thought. Its proem asks what the mind “paints” when faced with ambiguous flesh, fruit and flowers. The poem then explodes into a Dionysian garden of 10,000 shifting forms, where fruit, flesh, light, scent and sexuality merge. Swelling, splitting, spilling, oozing and fertilizing replace fixed forms. The orgy becomes an ecstatic liberation of perception from consensus and rigid categories
an ecstatic poem where a flâneur escapes a bleak, logical “consensus dream” by entering a lush dell. Rejecting modern numbness, the landscape undergoes a sensory metamorphosis. Through intense synesthesia, light dissolves into liquid juice and sunbeams ooze over classical marble. Figures like Pan and Nymphs emerge, echoing Wordsworth and Keats. Written in Dean’s signature pseudo-archaic style, the poem is an anti-rationalist celebration of imagination
• “Orgy” concludes not as a literal description of nature, but as a triumphant defense of the poetic imagination’s capacity to conquer a sterile reality.
