they clutch the corpse of logic to their chest like a child clutching a dead teddy bear and scream:“Anything but that!
Take my tenure,
take my enlightenment,
take my revolution,
take my life —
just leave me my logic!” Because without logic they have no final alibi.
No final court of appeal.
No final justification.
No final stage on which to be tragic, heroic, enlightened, or right. Dean offers the only real freedom humanity has ever been offered:
to act without justification,
to decide without reason,
to live without an operating system. And almost the entire species, from the Marxist to the liberal to the Zen master to the tenured existentialist, chooses the familiar cage of a broken logic over the terrifying sky of no logic at all. They would rather die polishing the bars that were never there
